Enterprise Builders™, announced today that it will be launching the Houston Entrepreneurs Boot Camp in February, 2010. This intensive business incubator program will go beyond traditional coaching and mentoring programs. The goal of the Boot Camp is to "empower" emerging technology companies with an integrated intervention that includes mentoring, outsourcing non-core functions, "pilot" programs, internet marketing, and innovative products and software. This "hands on" approach has, as its goal, to accelerate their maturity with the goal of garnering financing for their fledgling company.
Frank "Buddy" Rhodes, partner at Enterprise Builders, noted: "In Houston there are a lot of start-up companies with excellent technology products and applications. However, most of these technology companies are not well versed in small business management. Our Entrepreneurs Boot Camp will give them the resources they need to accelerate their growth through mentoring so they can learn from the experience of others who have already been successful. We are creating an environment where technology start-ups can master all of the business details, and then we'll bring investors around so they get the best opportunity for the funding they need."
The Boot Camp Philosophy has, as its foundation, a response to an article, "The Demise of Web 2.0", which was published in the April, 2007 issue of Atlantic Monthly. In that article, an analyst was quoted as predicting the failure of hundreds of venture backed entities due to "inadequate and incomplete management teams." The goal of the Boot Camp process is to "create adequate and complete management teams."
The first group of 10-20 entrepreneur management teams will begin the four-month Boot Camp program on February 19th 2010, with another group of up to 20 candidates starting every month. The Boot Camp participants that make it to "graduation" (June 18th, 2010) will have the opportunity to present their venture to a panel of pre-screened qualified investors.
Companies, from start up to $20 million in revenue, will learn everything they need to know to bring a new technology product to market, including finance, accounting, sales, marketing and best practices for company management. Cost of the Entrepreneurs Boot Camp is $5,000, which covers all the courses, personalized advice and mentoring, as well as individual memberships in the Houston Technology Center and the Rice Alliance.
The Entrepreneurs Boot Camp curriculum was designed by Dan Valdez, also an Enterprise Builders partner, who assisted in the creation of the original program for the University of Houston's Wolff Center for Entrepreneurship, ranked the number one Undergraduate Entrepreneurship program by Entrepreneur magazine., There will be subject matter experts who will share their first hand business experience and teach the entrepreneurs how to implement the various aspects of their business successfully.
"Basically, it's an incubator program on steroids," Valdez said. "It is a very, very fast-paced program, highly concentrated, very intense and comprehensive. It's not like school at all."
"We're going to make these entrepreneurs so attractive to the investor that the potential for funding is optimized," Valdez commented. "No investor has ever found anything like this, with all the hand-holding and mentoring. These small businesses will be taught everything they need to know so that the investors' investment is given added support and then we will continue the process. In order to "graduate", though, fundamental corporate re-structuring may need to occur. "
Following graduation, the entrepreneurs, for an additional fee, will receive 9-12 months of mentoring and guidance as members of the Owners Alliance until the new company is off and running, experiencing vigorous growth and success.
Innovative Financing
Greg J. Micek, JD managing partner at Enterprise Builders, said: " Participants in the boot camp get access to a specific funding program that 'marries' existing public companies with emerging technologies. , with a caveat that the participant may need to be prepared to make fundamental changes to their corporate structure for the funding to "fit"." Further, there are no net transaction costs charged by Enterprise Builders, although third party charges may occur. Other funding strategies will be announced as they are put in place.
